All the way over here, I have to defend the south.
So today in class we basically just had a long discussion about the Guerra Civil and the topic soon changed to the civil war in the US and what we considered the south versus the north.
Keep in mind there is only one southerner in my class besides me, a Texan who goes to Vanderbilt. The rest are from Indiana, Chicago, new york, or new jersey. So at least in my mind, there isn’t exactly a diverse...

And later, Flamenco
As soon as I got back to my home stay after the hike back from eating Colcots, I quickly went into a food coma and woke up around 7 or 8 at night. On the walk back I had learned about some kind of fire or barbecue festival that was being held somewhere in the city, so around 11 or 12 I left to meet some friends to go see it.
It was actually a fairly small festival but really cool. There was a...

A hike to eat Calçots
Yesterday was perhaps the most Catalan filled day of the trip thus far. I woke way early in the morning at around 10 (which yes, on a Saturday in Barcelona, is early) and then took a 40 minute transit ride on the metro to the north of the city. We walked up a really nice dirt path into the hillsides surround Barcelona. It was a 2 hour hike with great views. When we got to the restaurant we were...

Classes!
Today was the first day it rained and i woke up late for clawed bc my alarm didn’t go off. While walking to pick out my classes, I couldn’t help but notice how bright blue my rain jacket is and how grey and dark everyone else’s is. Needless to say, I was extremely aware of my presence walking down the street. The upside to today being very stance feeling, I did get to pick my classes! I ended up...

Uh Oh.
First weekend in Barcelona was crazy. I already told you guys about Tapas and the Discoteca friday night. I slept most of yesterday, but then around 3 I met some friends at Park Guell and walked around it for hours. It was amazing and the architecture was incredible. The park was designed completely by Gaudi and from on top of the hill it’s on you can see all the way to the ocean. I would...
Rambling about Tunisia
So during my long travel day across the Atlantic I have also had ample tint to read the New York Times almost cover to cover. The two stories I found on the “Jasmine Revolution” that has sprung up in Tunisia, I thought were really interesting.
There’s a lot of talk about how this could be the beginning of a new wave to sweep through the middle east, the “Arab...
Mis primeros clases y pensamientos de la ciudad
Today was our first day of classes, which where really good and would have only been better if I had not gone out before. Last night after dinner with our homestay, a few of us went to this scottish bar and afterwards to a discoteca. It was really fun but unfortunately on weeknights the metro closes at 12 and the clubs don’t get big until 2 or 3. Because of this many people don’t end...

Maybe I’ll just catch you guys up on the last few days instead. They have been very tiring so far. Yesterday I met everyone else in the CIEE program as well as some GA’s which are kind of like PA’s for all you rhodesians. They broke us up into group as and showed us around the city. I don’t remember much from yesterday afternoon until after dinner when the always amazing...

Voy a España
I’m all packed and just minutes away from heading out the door to the airport. I’ve managed to pack the most amount of stuff in the least amount of time, so let’s hope I didn’t forget anything. This has been a stressful last few days and beginning this trip will certainly take a weight off my shoulders. I’m sure once I’m over there I will have too much to post....
Awkward Moment of the Day
my dad was going over a packing list from my study abroad company ciee. He was reading aloud, deodorant, extra pare of glasses, contraceptives… And then we both pause from what we are doing. The he starts laughing and I immediately start wondering how hard those could be to find and then he asks if I’m going to pack them. “to me it’s just kinda funny that that made the...

Hey friends!
Maybe actual blogging that last blog broke my bloggers block, well let’s hope so anyway. Tonight I spent a bit of my time trying to fix up the old globemedatrhodes blog that I made last summer. I uploaded all 9 issues of the Pulse and made some small changes around the page. It will hopefully be in use very soon and very often so if you are interested in global health or our...
Travel Limbo A.K.A. Bloggers Block
So I don’t know if it has been the monotony of the last few days or because I haven’t been on the internet as much, but I feel like i haven’t tumbled in a while. The last few days I have just been exercising, reading, and hanging around clarksville. I leave to go back to memphis in a few days to move out and then I come back to prepare for Spain. So while I am waiting to go to...

My dad recently showed me this clip of a doctor in Illinois. who has only charged $5 visits for over 55 years of service. His costs are extremely low and his dedication to serving his community is amazing. Even though it is impossible and unrealistic to ask all doctors and medical professionals to have his kind of dedication and make his kind of sacrifices, it is amazing what could be done with...
